THE SAMARITAN WOMAN

“The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

John 4:15

The Samaritan Woman, her thirst and hunger for water and bread of eternal life, her recognition of JESUS as the only true source that quenches eternally make her a TRUE HERO!

At the same time as Jesus, whose feet hurt and had a parched mouth because of the hot Eastern sun that burned so hot, a woman of ill repute who came from Sychar was heading towards the well.  The woman had been beautiful in her youth, but after living a life of moral debauchery that beautiful face had become hard and insolent; her countenance, which had been attractive, had turned old and had the look of a tired woman.  She preferred to go to the well at noon to avoid the haughty looks of the women from around the place.  Because she had the need to walk alone she met He who changed her life completely, the only one who could make her recuperate her condition and turn her into a respectable woman who could in addition be useful and be honorable.  Jesus told her: “Give me a drink… the Samaritan woman said to him, how is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.” And Jesus answered her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water?”Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle.Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
