“…Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.”

2 Kings 2:9

Elisha, his merciful actions and incessant activity to free the people from paganism make him a TRUE HERO!

The name Elisha means “Salvation” in Hebrew.  The son of Shaphat, of Abel-meholah (1 Kings 19:16) he was the disciple and successor of the prophet Elijah. Elijah “found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him” (1 Kings 19:19). This was the sign and symbol that Elijah was adopting Elisha as his son and successor as a prophet.  Elisha left his family and was with Elijah for seven or eight years before Elijah left the earth.  Elisha’s career stands out for his merciful actions and incessant activity.  His sole purpose was to complete Elijah’s reforms as to the renovation of the ancient truths and free his people from paganism.  He was frequently called “man of God” (2 Kings 4:9; 5:15). Some of his miracles include the multiplication of the widow’s oil (2 Kings 4:1-7), making some deadly wild gourds harmless (2 Kings 4:38-41) and making an axe head float in the river (2 Kings 6:1-7).  At least two of his miracles resemble some of Jesus’ miracles: the multiplication of bread (2 Kings 4:42-44) and the healing of Naaman, the leper (2 Kings 5:1-14).
